DEAR FRIENDS

On 7 April I was honoured by the South African chapter for the Commanderie de Bordeaux. They bestowed on me an Honorary Membership for my contribution to the industry and the investment I have made at Morgenster in creating a “landmark” for Bordeaux-style wines in SA. This follows my initial induction into the South African chapter on 9 March 2013. After the meeting we dined at 95 At Morgenster so I was able to introduce these friends to fine food from the north of Italy. Here I am with Caroline Rillema of Caroline’s Fine Wines, at the meeting on 7 April.

We had some wonderful feedback on my Morgenster 2000 from a very knowledgeable group of people. More than 30 members of the International Wine & Food Society recently enjoyed a 3-day Festival in Cape Town to honour the memory of John Avery. One of these was a sought after ‘Dine-Around’, at which local members received visitors in their homes. David Swingler, a long-time friend of Morgenster, selected the wines for the evening; each host prepared foods of their own choice.

David reported: “Morgenster 2000 was a selection this year and was found to be in pristine condition, proving a magnificent foil for particularly the cheese course at dinner. To be so appreciated by members from around the world who have travelled, dined and wined extensively was a triumph that reflected well on the potential longevity of fine South African red wine.”

Harvest 2016 follows 2015 as a great vintage. To begin, 2016 was the driest in recorded history with very high temperatures in December and January. Our white cultivars came in early and performed very well with beautiful aromas. Then temperatures dropped rapidly in February and March and we had 78 mm rain in March – Grazie al cielo! The lower temperatures mean slower ripening and help Henry to make wines of great balance, fine tannins and focus on length and purity. I am excited!

Till next time,

Ciao!
Giulio

FROM HENRY IN THE WINECELLAR

Our bottling team is working very hard, bottling some delicious NU (pronounced “new”) Series 1 wines. NU Merlot 2013, NU Sangiovese 2015 and NU Series 1 Sauvignon Blanc 2016 are now on sale through our online shop. Also look out for the latest release of our Italian Collection Caruso 2016. This sangiovese rosé has built up a fantastic following, and every year I am under pressure to get the new vintage ready before we run out.

FROM THE OLIVE CELLAR

It’s a third of the way into olive harvest, and we managed to coax a few words from Corius, our busy Farm Manager. “It’s looking promising,” he said, adding that quality and quantity are good. Then, the olive orchards and his team of over 80 harvesters reclaimed his attention. Meanwhile, the olive factory is working flat out ...
