DEAR FRIENDS

As usual the blend was done by cellar master Henry Kotzé (right) in consultation with Pierre Lurton of Château Cheval.

We are happy to share the important international recognition that Morgenster wines and olive oils have recently received.

Morgenster Estate Reserve 2014 has won the top honour, the trophy, in the Bordeaux blend category at the Six Nations Wine Challenge 2018 held in Sydney Australia. This is a very important acknowledgement of our flagship Bordeaux blend as it competed against top Bordeaux blends from six New World producer nations - Australia, Canada, Chile, New Zealand, South Africa and Unites States of America. To mark this honour we are releasing a limited number of bottles from the tasting room at R476 a bottle plus courier cost - info@morgenster.co.za or +27 (0)21 852 1738.

We had been looking forward to the appearance of Flos Olei Guide 2019 because we knew that our 2018 harvest olive oil was excellent.

You can imagine our delight at the end of September to hear that Morgenster extra virgin olive oil was again rated the best in South Africa by this authoritative and highly respected international judging body.

For the sixth year Flos Olei has awarded our oil 98%, placing it once again among the best olive oils in the world. It was the highest score given to a South African olive oil.

We have now completed the planned extension of our vineyards, adding two hectares of Vermentino, two hectares of Sangiovese, one hectare of Nebbiolo and one hectare of Semillon. This brings Morgenster close to its target of 40 hectares.

The renovation to our tasting room is finished, in time for our summer visitors. It is a comfortable modern look which we hope you will enjoy. We have also updated our wine tasting offering so that visitors can select from our Bordeaux, Italian Collection and single varietal ranges, and are introducing vegetarian, cheese and Italian meat platters in addition to our delicious olive and olive oil tasting platters.

Our tasting room team of Johnny, Dumisani, Sylvia, Zuki, Werner, Komani, Vuyina and Anri
are looking forward to welcoming you.

In our last issue we offered to give three bottles of our delicious Morgenster Estate Reserve 2012, which James Suckling rated at 92 points, to two people who updated their Morgenster Minute contact details.
We are happy to announce that Christopher Cosgrove and Frances Wood will shortly be receiving their wines.

Ciao!

Alessandra

We will release these wines in autumn next year.

Henry and Federica

We have released three vintages of our single varietal wines. This range, made in an accessible, fruit driven style, enhances the unique characteristics that the Morgenster terroir lends to the grapes. They also offer interesting insights into the dynamics of blending by showcasing each grape’s contribution before they go into the Estate’s prized blends. They are available from selected retailers, the Estate or online at http://shop.morgenster.co.za.

Morgenster Cabernet Sauvignon 2014 - Classical Cabernet Sauvignon traits - rich red fruit flavours layering black currants, cherries and plums.
Morgenster Cabernet Franc 2016 - Lush cassis concentrated fruit and cinnamon, with peanut and clove-like spice on the nose.
Morgenster Sangiovese 2018 - Our version of Chianti Classico is a delicious anytime, anywhere wine, light fresh and fruit driven.

FROM NICO IN THE OLIVE CELLAR

We have just heard that two of our extra virgin olive oils have won second places in the L'Orciolo d'Oro southern hemisphere extra virgin olive oil competition. Our flagship Morgenster Extra Virgin Olive Oil is a blend of 14 Italian varieties and was awarded in the delicate fruity category. Single cultivar Don Carlo Extra Virgin Olive Oil won second place in the intense fruity category.

L'Orciolo d'Oro is the foremost olive oil competition in Italy, originally established as a national competition. In 1999 when it was opened to international producers Morgenster became the first South African oil to win.
