We remember 2002 as being a devastating year for fires. Well this year has surpassed it and fire season is not over yet. We are always saddened to see the horrific damage to property and the effect these fires have on the mood of the communities involved. At Villiera we are well organised to combat a fire threat where one of our major concerns is the wildlife sanctuary. When fires threaten, humans can be evacuated but often animals have nowhere to go.

Apart from the fires, the extremely dry conditions this year have resulted in limited irrigation and very low yields. On the flip side, the vines are healthy and the quality of the fruit is great. We are presently harvesting Chardonnay and Pinot Noir for our Cap Classiques and we are planning to harvest a record quantity to satisfy a growing demand. The excitement of another harvest is noticeable at Villiera and we have an experienced, dedicated team to ensure our quality standards are maintained.

While we are enjoying the heat here, at Domaine Grier (France) we have been on the periphery of the big freeze in Europe. Maximum temperatures are 8°C and minimum temperatures are below 0°C in our vineyards. While outside conditions are cold we are taking the opportunity of upgrading our Cellar Door facilities there.

New Releases

Bush Vine Blanc Fume 2016

After a review of our range before the 2016 harvest, we decided to change the style of our Bush Vine Sauvignon Blanc. This 34 year old unirrigated block has consistently produced Sauvignon Blanc with great longevity. We decided to emphasize this by creating a more serious wine that compliments great food and has the ability to mature. The grapes were picked slightly riper and we began the fermentation in an egg shaped container with a portion of the skins to contribute greater flavour. After 10 days the fermenting wine was transferred to French oak barrels (50% new) for 3 months. The lees was kept in suspension for more richness. The oaking is discreet but the wine is complex, although the flavours are subtle. The wine also displays some minerality and it will develop greater intensity with age. This is our 2016 Bush Vine Blanc Fume which we are now releasing after 8 months of extra maturation in the bottle.

Antithesis 2015

This is a special once off blend created in 2015 (see our fact sheet included, for further information). It was made in limited quantities and was released to our Wine Club members. We experienced a good response and are reminding you that stocks will soon be depleted. The price is R250/bottle (incl VAT).

Monro Brut 2010

After receiving a double gold Veritas award for our 2009 Monro Brut, it sold out quickly and we are now onto our 2010 vintage. We have revised the packaging to bring it in line with the rest of our Cap Classique range. The Monro Brut is our Prestige Cuvee and spent 6 years on the yeast before disgorging. It is a regular award winner, making it one of South Africa’s leading bottle fermented bubblies. The 2010 vintage of Monro Brut received a 4˝ Star Platter rating and is likely to pick up more awards once competition season begins.
