Entering the last quarter of the year, we are impressed by the amount of PR the Wine Industry is involved in. Wine lovers have abundant opportunities to experience and taste local wines. There are national events, regional events and producer events covering almost all categories.

In September, Cape Wine 2018 attracted prospective buyers from around the globe and the South African Wine Industry put its best foot forward. The Cape Winemakers Guild Auction, one of 2 major South African Auctions was successfully held at the end of September. International buyers, local trade and individual buyers all had the opportunity to bid on some of the most sought-after wine in South Africa. During October, the Stellenbosch region took their wines to Johannesburg and also reinforced their focus on Cabernet Sauvignon at a local event.

With the festive season approaching, there are numerous Bubbly Festivals coming up and as bubbly specialists, Villiera will be at most of them. Our own Fizzytherapy Festival in November is obviously a highlight on our calendar and we hope to see as many of you here as possible.

 
 

New Release

Our 2018 white wines are now available, with the exception of our Bush Vine Blanc Fumé, which is still in barrel.

The launch of the Clan has been well received and it will be available for tasting in our "Tasting room", along with other reserve wines, in a "Reserve Wine" tasting option from mid-November. This is a new introduction to allow an opportunity to taste our more expensive wines as a group for R100/person. If you decide on this option, the rest of our wines will be available for tasting, free of charge.

 
 

Awards

We have had significant success on the competition circuit, particularly for our Cap Classiques. The results show that our bubblies are not only some of the best, but they also offer the best value.

In his 2018 special South African report, Tim Atkin MW rated our 2012 Monro Brut 94 points and our Tradition Brut was rated as Best Value Cap Classique of the Year. Our Barrel Fermented Chenin Blanc and Bush Vine Blanc Fumé were also rated over 90 points.

At the International Wine and Spirit Competition, we received a Gold Outstanding for our Monro Brut 2012 and it won the Trophy as South Africa’s best Cap Classique. We also received Silver Outstanding awards for our Monro Merlot and Tradition Brut.

At the 2018 Amorim Cap Classique Challenge we were awarded a Gold medal for our Monro Brut 2011.

At Michelangelo we received Gold medals for our 2018 Down to Earth White and our 2018 Chenin Blanc.

At Veritas our Monro Brut 2012 was awarded a Gold Medal.

 
 

Domaine Grier

You might be aware that Europe was wet until the end of June, with a warm ripening period. At Domaine Grier, these favourable conditions have resulted in a good harvest this year.

A recently installed anti Sanglier (Wild boar) fence also contributed to the larger yield in 2018. Jeff will be there in the second half of October to finish the harvest with the team.

 
 

Events

FIZZYTHERAPY FESTIVAL

Our 3rd annual Fizzytherapy Festival will be held on Sunday, 25 November in conjunction with our 35th anniversary. We will celebrate this special occasion with a bang, reminiscing about where it all started with an 80’s theme! Think pastels and metallic colours, a touch of bling, enormous hairdos, shoulder pads, rolled-up jacket sleeves and outrageous make-up. For those who wish to dress up to match the theme, there will be a surprise for one or two of you.

Although the theme is of yesteryear, we will entice you with the hippest food of today - street-style cuisine from food trucks like Jack Rabbit, Boulevard 82 Food Truck, Pizza Piaggio, Coffee Café and N2 Ice Cream Lab, while oysters from the Mussel Monger and Oyster Bar will compliment any bubbly, in style. For those looking for something new and fresh, we are pleased to welcome Hokey Poke to the festival this year to tickle those taste buds. Our Villiera and Domaine Grier red and white wines will also be available at our tasting stations, where fun-loving Villiera family members will be waiting for you.
