We have such good news that this is the first thing I like to tell you! My favourite Morgenster Reserve 2003 won the overall Wine of the Year award at the UK Sommelier Wine Awards 2016 which were judged and unveiled at Imbibe Live, in London in July. Imbibe.com is the news platform for the UK on-trade drinks professionals and this award is their “coveted best of the best of the best”. The overall Wine of the Year was judged by 40 judges from tasting their Critics Choice Gold winners.

It was a great pleasure to me that Morgenster 2003 was judged by such important palates because over 20 years ago I had the dream of making Bordeaux wines that would age beautifully. Il mio sogno diventato realtà! (My dream becomes reality!)

I have just tasted our new wine and chocolate pairing that Margi and Henry developed for our vistors to the tasting room. They paired my three Italian Collection wines Caruso, Tosca and Nabucco with four different hand made chocolates that complement the lively character of my very special wines grown and made on Morgenster; they remind me of my home in Italy. I hope when you come to Morgenster you will try this for yourself. Delizioso!

Till next time,

Beginning this month, July, I have the pleasure of giving my monthly “wine maker’s choice” to Margi and Anri in the tasting room, suggesting the wines to offer for their tutored tastings. This is a new feature in the Tasting Room. My first selection coincidentally included Morgenster Reserve 2003 which scooped the UK’s overall Wine of the Year award. I loved that the judges noted the 2003’s “serious bottle age”, and described it as “dense and serious, yet also elegant and balanced, being a worthy winner with real pedigree.” It is a treat to both nose and palate!

Since we are all so excited about the award we will continue July’s selection through to August. The Bordeaux tasting offers Morgenster White 2014; Morgenster Reserve 2012 as a comparison with the older Morgenster Reserve 2003; and sibling label Morgenster Lourens River Valley compares vintages 2005 and 2012. In the next issue I will give you the September tasting line-up.

Investment in the quality of our olive groves is ongoing, and as part of that, an Italian consultant has just spent a week at the farm sharing his specialist advice about our olive trees and working with our team. From our olive factory, the first orders of our 2016 Morgenster extra virgin olive oil have just started being delivered.

The picture shows our five extra virgin olive oils: Morgenster blend; Don Carlo single varietal, intense; Morgenster lemon enhanced; Monte Marcello single varietal, late harvest, White truffle enhanced in two sizes.

Here’s a richly flavoured, comforting winter recipe from Andrew and Nell Rogers at Calitzdorp Country House.
