DEAR FRIENDS

It is my pleasure to be speaking to you again. We have been very busy on the farm and now I can tell you about our exciting projects and some changes I think you will like.

As you know, for eight years in a row, Morgenster extra virgin olive oil has been awarded a top score in the international Flos Olei guide which assesses the world’s best olive oils. It is important for us to maintain and surpass that level of excellence so I imported and installed the latest Pieralisi press into our olive factory in time for the 2017 olive harvest. The main benefit is that it is very efficient which means that we retain even better flavour than before. The quality of our 2017 olive oil is fantastic!

I released eight of our wines to the market in May. They appear under new labels and three are under screw caps for the first time.

The labels of our two red Bordeaux, Morgenster Reserve 2013 and Morgenster Lourens River Valley 2013, are only slightly changed, but I decided to print onto a different high quality textured paper. The label of the third of our Bordeaux, Morgenster White Reserve 2015, is also only slightly changed.

There are revisions with our three Italian cultivar wines too. Morgenster Nabucco 2014 and Tosca 2014 labels look a little different. Our big news though is that Nabucco 2014 is now the Estate’s first certified “Single vineyard wine”. My delicious taste of summer, Morgenster Caruso 2017, is for the first time under screw cap.

You will see the most change to our single varietal range. I decided to rebrand it away from the earlier NU look. Morgenster Sauvignon Blanc 2017 and Morgenster Sangiovese 2017 are the first of the range to appear under new labels and screw caps. The pictures of our new labels are below. I hope you like them.

Ciao!
Giulio.

FROM HENRY IN THE WINE CELLAR

The main feature of our 2017 harvest was that it was very dry. Fortunately Morgenster has irrigation and we harvested the same quantity as last year. The result of the dry heat was a concentration of the fruit and concentrated, structured phenolics. Bunches were smaller and looser which helped even ripening. Quality is fantastic! Watch this space, or better still, come into our tasting room and enjoy the vintage results in our 2017 Sangiovese and Sauvignon Blanc. Here are our new look labels. We hope you like them!|

OLIVE CELLAR NEWS

We started harvesting and extracting Morgenster’s olives on 3 April, with the Frantoio variety coming in first as usual. Production from our olive groves continued until the end of May.

This year we had the additional excitement of seeing our new Pieralisi olive press in action. As we always taste the oils from the various cultivars as we process, we know that the quality of the 2017 harvest is outstanding.

Now the new oil rests in settling tanks for a few months before we start our blending process.

95 At Morgenster, which is a partnership between chef patron Giorgio Nava and Giulio Bertrand, owner of Morgenster Estate, closed for a winter recess from May until October 2017.

The Morgenster tasting room is open and its fireplace and sunny position makes it a lovely place to visit in winter for tastings of our exceptional wines, olive oils and olives. The pairing of our Italian styled wines with hand-made fine chocolates is perfect for winter too, we think.

We like to showcase an earlier with a later vinage wine, so in June our tasting room is offering:
Morgenster Estate Reserve 2009
Morgenster Estate Reserve 2012
Morgenster White Reserve 2014
Morgenster Lourens River Valley 2009
Morgenster Lourens River Valley 2012

In July we will be showcasing:
Morgenster Estate Reserve 2008
Morgenster Estate Reserve 2011
Morgenster White Reserve 2014
Morgenster Lourens River Valley 2008
Morgenster Lourens River Valley 2011

RECIPE

Today’s recipe is delicate angel fish fillets wrapped in parcels with vegetables, served with creamed spinach and sweet potato mash, and enjoyed with a glass of Morgenster Sauvignon Blanc 2017. Delicious! Catch the recipe here.
