We might be an established wine producer, but we remain a pioneering wine business. Apart from being at the forefront of numerous local wine categories, especially in Cap Classique, we have been pioneers on the environmental and social side of our business.

In the vineyard we have been long term enthusiasts of old vines. Around the world there is growing interest in low yielding, old vines but these vineyards have to be in good condition to ensure sustainable quality. Five years ago, we embarked on a new pruning system, referred to as "branching", which contributes to extending the life of a vine, while maintaining quality. We have pioneered the introduction of this system into South African viticulture and to do so, we had to invest in the services of an Italian company to teach the skills to our pruning team.

Interestingly, this system also sets us up for better results under drought conditions. We are now able to repeatedly obtain good quality from some of our older blocks and we have recently signed up to the "Old Vine Project". This is a project that is gaining momentum locally and as a passionate advocate, Xander Grier is driving our involvement. Old vines are considered to be anything over the age of 35 years and we are at a stage where we can begin claiming this. Soon, some of our reserve wines will be sold under the "old vine" banner. The cost is higher due to low yields but the quality more than compensates.

Soon to be Released

As previously mentioned, we replaced the Monro Red blend with Monro Merlot. However, it was always our intention to introduce a super-premium red blend. At this level of the spectrum, patience is required, but the long wait is finally over.

We are excited to introduce "The Clan" which reflects the close family unity and commitment to quality that has sustained the Grier family of Villiera over decades in the wine business.

The wine is a handcrafted, unique red blend consisting mainly of Cabernet Franc from a special site. We have familiarised ourselves with the fruit from this block for several years and we are confident in its ability to perform and produce long lasting wines.

The power and intensity of the Cabernet Franc is complemented by a small percentage of Carignan, which freshens the wine, improving the drinkability while creating a point of difference.

A period of 18 months in barrel contributes to the harmony and succulent nature of the wine. Attention to detail was foremost in our minds while creating and packaging "The Clan".

No expense has been spared in creating this wine and only 1 400 bottles have been produced. It will not be offered for standard tasting in our "Wine Sanctuary" but please look out for special tasting opportunities of this wine, such as at our Winter Festival and the Reserve Wine Tastings.

Awards

In the Cabernet Franc Challenge, we entered "The Clan" into the blend category and we were awarded Gold. It was also rated 93 points in the 2018 John Platter Guide.

In the Gilbert and Gaillard International Challenge, we received Gold medals for Down to Earth Red 2015, Cabernet Sauvignon 2015, Jasmine 2017, Chenin Blanc 2017, Sauvignon Blanc 2017 and Tradition Brut Non-Vintage.

These results emphasise the quality of our wines and we are proud to be consistent performers in various competitions both locally and abroad.
